Let’s look for wild mushrooms!
If you already have taken one of our wild mushroom ID classes or are already comfortable with identifying a good range of wild mushrooms and want to broaden your knowledge base, this is the class for you.
We’ll still have our focus on edible fungi, but also cover mushrooms that may be harder to identify or have many look alikes. Bring all your tricky questions about fungi and our mycologist guide will be happy to get answers for you.
What edible mushrooms will we cover?
You can request that the instructor discusses any fungi that you are interested in! What we see does depend on the climate at the time and what the forests offers us but we could find edible mushrooms like winter chanterelles, cauliflower mushroom, jelly fungus, wrinkle caps, shrimp russula, blue green anise mushrooms and many more…
There are literally 1000’s of mushrooms in BC, we can all learn more and who better to teach us but a mushroom specialist with 40+ years of knowledge with a passion for eating fungi. Willoughby Arevalo has taught about fungi around the world and has great respect and a deep understanding of the world of the mushroom.
Itinerary
- Meet at Malcolm knapp research forest parking lot near the office 30 minutes prior to class. We’ll convoy up through the gate to the teaching forest.
- Class starts with a meet & greet: assessing the class and what mushrooms they want to focus on learning
- Forest walk to identify all the mushrooms that we find and discuss best harvesting and cooking practices. Pro tips on how to find more locations for harvesting will be covered.
- Wrap up 15 min – Q&A with your instructor
How big is the class size?
Under 12 guests, a small class size will help us answer all your questions!
Trip Notes: The class is not a live cooking class or a harvesting trip, the class will study edible mushrooms in their habitat and discuss ethical and sustainable and safe harvesting practices. It is illegal to harvest in all parks in BC, private land and indigenous reserve lands, so we’ll teach you about areas you can legally pick and give you the tools to find you’re own mushroom patches.
Sliding Scale: If you can’t afford the trip cost, contact us directly to discuss our accessible rate, we want everyone to benefit from our knowledge, not just people that can afford it! Please note if you want to avoid the online ticketing fee, please send us an e-transfer, field trip cost +5% GST
Our team lives and teaches on the unceeded territory of many indigenous peoples in BC. We work with First Nation groups in BC to offer private classes pro-bono in areas where we teach, including the Katzie First Nation (Malcolm Knapp Forest Region), please contact us for details.
